I'm very big on amateur radio.
It about more than you think it is. There are many things to do with it, besides talking. We talk just about whatever we want, just like you do on the phone, but with no bills and at anytime regardless if the power is on or not. Cell phones will only last a few hours during a blackout.

Presently I cannot participate because transmitters endanger my life.

What excuse do you have?
